My Canary WebCam!
Canaries Coming Soon!
The webcam is back up!
I've been trying to figure out a way to get my webcam on the other side of the house (which has been difficult). There were several options. I could go with a wireless webcam (expensive). Or I could buy several USB cables and signal boosters and run it under the house (expensive and difficult to set up). Or, what I finally went with, is another computer running on my in-house wireless network. Since I wanted to spend as little as possible and take up as little space as possible this is what I did: I picked up an old used 400 megahertz computer (free) and installed a wireless card in the back (about $40). Since I didn't have a monitor, keyboard or mouse, I ran an extension from the bird room all the way to the other side of the house in my computer room, powering up the tower that I attached to the components of my home computer (keyboard, monitor, mouse, etc.). Once I had the software installed and running, I disconnected everything (except the power and webcam) and brought the tower and webcam back (still running) into the canary room. This worked great. The only down side is that if we ever have a power outage I will have to bring the tower back to my computer room to get the software running again. A laptop with a wireless PCMCIA card would be ideal since it's lightweight and consists of the whole system. (Perhaps someday if I inherit a spare laptop I'll convert to that setup!)

As far as software, I tried Coffeecup Webcam software (trial version) which expired after 30 days but I really liked it. I broke down and purchased the software for $34. I tried other webcam software but I always had problems and had to use an outside service (which can always go down). With this system, I own the hardware, software and website, so it should always stay up and running (unless the power goes out!).

I hope you enjoy my canaries!
