Lubricating Cast Bullets

I finished casting for the day and needed to lube the bullets to keep them from oxidizing and to get them ready to shoot.

There's a black powder shop here in Denver and they recommended that I use 'Bore Butter' to lube the bullets.

I lubed these by just rubbing on the Bore Butter. At first it was difficult since it was cold in the garage and the Bore Butter was pretty solid. But I found that it warmed up and softened in my hands easily. For this part, rubber gloves are in order.

Well here you have it, a whole bunch of cast lubricated bullets ready to shoot. Casting bullets can be VERY cost effective. This is about 200 bullets and retail value is about $120 (about $12 for 20 bullets). That means that I paid for both molds and my electric melter in about half a day! These bullets are 320 grain 50 caliber, R.E.A.L. (Rifling Engraved At Loading) hunting bullets. I have a Lyman 50 caliber Great Plains Hunter muzzleloader that is designed for conicals (instead of round balls). I plan to use these for target practice as well as hunting. These bullets should be able to take all big game in Colorado including Elk and Black Bear!

I soon realized that if I dropped one of these bullets made of pure lead on the cement floor it deformed so much that it had to be melted and recast. Finding something to store these bullets in was a challenge. I called Sportsman's Warehouse, Cabelas, and other sporting good stores / black powder stores and no one had any plastic cases to store these in. So I improvised. I work for a biotechnology company and we use literally hundreds of 15 mL centrifuge tubes every month. The styrofoam bottoms that hold these tubes works perfect for storing these R.E.A.L. bullets. I can stack them two to a hole and get 100 bullets in one styrofoam block. These are stored as non-lubed bullets since I'm not sure if the lube will interact with the styrofoam (I would imagine that it would have some kind of effect and may melt the styrofoam).

Well that's it! Thanks for visiting my bullet casting website! If you have any suggestions or comments please send me an e-mail to c2hardwick@hotmail.com.
